How do you handle pushback from children who want to go to school?

My 11-year-old has said several times that she wants to go to school. Her friends from the neighbourhood all go. How do families navigate this?

Take it seriously. Have a real conversation: what specifically does she want from school? Some of it can be provided at home or through co-ops.

Trial visit. Arrange for her to attend school for one day as an honest exploration. Many children come home with a much clearer preference for home education.

Address the actual need. Usually it is not school she wants but something school represents: friends, structure, belonging. Identify the real need and meet it directly.

Some families do send children to school when genuinely asked. It is not a failure. Home education is the right choice only when it is right for the whole family including the child.
