Deregistering from school - how do you handle the school's response?

Planning to deregister our 8-year-old. The head teacher has implied this will be difficult. What are our rights?

Deregistration from state school is a right, not a request. Write: "I am writing to inform you that [child] will no longer attend school from [date], as we will be educating at home."

The school cannot refuse or delay deregistration. Contact your local home education support group if they attempt to.

Do not be drawn into a justification conversation. You owe them a notification, not an explanation. Keep the letter brief, factual and dated.

Once deregistered, the local authority may make contact to confirm education is taking place. This is routine, not punitive.
